Like Peter Venkman and Raymond Stantz, Spengler is a doctor of parapsychology. He is tall, laconic, wears glasses, and has a fast right arm. He is addicted to science and has invented virtually all the tools and weapons of the Ghostbusters team. He is also, along with Stantz, often responsible for devising a theory behind the paranormal phenomena the team encounters. In a broad sense, Spengler is the brain of the group.

If the others do not understand something about the situation they find themselves in, Spengler is their point of contact. He often gives such a complex answer that his colleagues are not much wiser. Although he is brilliant, Spengler has almost no social skills. Consequently, he often leaves the talking to Venkman.
